What Do You Mean by GRE?

The GRE, or the Graduate Record Examination is a standardized test which is a pre-requisite when students intend to pursue their Masters degrees overseas. It is conducted by Educational Testing Services that evaluate one’s analytical, verbal and quant reasoning skills. After having taken the GRE, one receives separate scores for the three sections mentioned.

Verbal and quantitative scores can range from 130 to 170 and they are always whole numbers, while writing scores can be as low as 0 and as high as 6, which are assigned in half-point increments. The section on verbal reasoning measures one’s ability to evaluate written material, to gather information from it and combine it while analyzing how different parts of sentences are related to each other and pick up relationships between various words and concepts.

Quantitative Reasoning tests one’s ability to solve problems, based on how they perform on concepts of arithmetic, geometry, algebra and data analysis. The Analytical Writing section focuses on evaluating one’s critical thinking and analytical writing skills, while narrowing down on their ability to articulate and be able to clearly express complex ideas.

It is advised that students schedule to take the GRE a few months before the deadlines for their university applications, so that they can retake it if their scores are lower than they had hoped.

GRE Exam Structure

The overall testing time for the GRE Test is about 3 hours and 45 minutes. There are six sections with a 10-minute break following the third section.

An unidentified unscored section that does not count toward your score may be included and may appear in any order after the Analytical Writing section. Questions in the unscored section are being tried out either for possible use in future tests or to ensure that scores on new editions of the test are comparable to scores from earlier editions.
An identified research section that does not count toward your score may be included in place of the unscored section. The research section will always appear at the end of the test. Questions in this section are included for ETS research purposes.

The Analytical Writing section will always be first. The Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and unidentified/unscored sections may appear in any order; therefore, you should treat each section as if it counts toward your score.

How many questions do I need to get right for a good GRE score?

Quant: One must get at least 18 questions out of 20 correct on each section

Verbal: One must get at least 15 out of 20 questions correct on each section

Can I use a calculator in the GRE?

An on-screen calculator with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and square root functions is present, however, it is recommended that one only use it when it is of the utmost requirement. Another important tip is that if one is using the calculator for the Numeric value entry, they should use the “Transfer Display” function so errors can be prevented while typing the answers manually.
