What Do You Mean by SAT?

The SAT, or the Scholastic Assessment Test is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities as a part of the admissions process. It is a standardized test with two main sections, namely the Evidence-based Reading section and Writing, and the Math section. These two sections are further broken down into 4 sections – Reading, Writing and Language, Math (with calculator) and Math (Without calculator).

The test taker is able to optionally write an essay, which forms the fifth section. The SAT lasts for three hours (or 3 hours and 50 minutes if the optional essay section is taken). The SAT is scored by adding the two main section scores. The total score usually ranges between 400-1600.

Reading:

In the reading section, there is a section with 52 questions to solve within a time limit of 65 minutes. All questions are multiple choice ones based on reading passages. Some questions may be accompanied by tables, graphs, and charts. The Reading Test contributes (with the Writing and Language Test) to two subscores, each ranging from 1 to 15 points: Command of Evidence and Words in Context.

Writing:

The writing section is made up of one section with 44 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 35 minutes. All questions are based on reading passages, sometimes accompanied by tables, graphs and charts. The test taker is to read passages and suggest corrections/improvements for the content which has been underlined. The content of the passages ranges from topic arguments to nonfiction narratives in a variety of subjects. The test taker is evaluated on increasing the clarity of argument, improving analysis of topics in social studies and science, changing sentence or word structure to increase organizational quality and impact of writing, etc.

Mathematics:

This section is divided into 2 sections- Math (With calculator) and Math (Without calculator). This section lasts for 80 minutes and has 58 questions, out of which 45 are multiple choice questions and 13 grid-in questions. A test score for the math section is reported on a scale of 10-40, with an increment of 0.5 and a section score is reported on a scale of 200 to 800.

How many times can I take the SAT?

You can take the SAT however many times you wish to. However, it also depends on the program/college you are applying to.

Can I cancel my scores?

Yes, if you finish taking the test and want to cancel your scores, you can ask the test supervisor for a “Request to Cancel Test Scores” form. You can submit the completed form immediately at the test center or later as well.

Am I allowed to use a calculator?
