study abroad procedure

When should I start planning my study abroad procedure?

Nowadays, everything seems to be about studying abroad and enjoying the different experiences it brings. No doubt, studying in another country can give one an edge like no other, and coupled with living independently, interacting with new cultures and people can boost your personal and professional life immensely. However, as beneficial and exciting as it is, the most important thing is plenty of proper planning and creating a timeline for yourself that is doable, realistic and also meets all the deadlines well in time. To save yourself the confusion and anxiety, take a look at a few points that can help you structure your study abroad plan, and be met with the best success possible.

Important questions to ask

So you know you wish to study in a foreign country, but are unsure of any of the details. This happens to many aspiring students, and often they get caught up in so many specifics it ends up being frustrating. To avoid this altogether, make sure you ask yourself three main questions:

  1. How much are you willing to spend?
  2. What exactly do you want to study?
  3. Where/ in which areas do you want to study?

When it comes to forming a realistic idea of your study abroad future, these three aspects can give you much more clarity. Planning out your finances is key- talking to your parents/ guardians, gathering your own funds, applying for a loan or a scholarship etc all take quite some time and is of course, one of the essentials. After that, narrowing down exactly which fields interest you, and what kind of courses are offered in regards to these fields is key. Some may fit in your budget, some may not, and some may be a stretch, but ultimately it is up to you to consider whether or not a certain option is worth the cost. This brings us to our first part of the timeline.

In-depth research

As mentioned previously, research of all kinds is of utmost importance here. Jumping into applications and registrations headfirst without a clear idea can prove to be quite disastrous, sometimes financially too. It necessitates careful consideration of multiple factors, and a comprehensive understanding of the admissions cycle. This research phase should ideally begin 12-18 months before you wish to fly abroad, and should be holistic in nature, including course content, institutional reputation, geographical location, language prerequisites etc.

Shortlisting Choices

Once you have collected as much information as you can (and more is always better), compile it into a format that is easiest to work with for you. Take into account all the key factors of the universities and courses that you have noted down, thinking about curriculum, faculty expertise, global ranking, campus facilities, and opportunities for extracurriculars. By doing so, you’ll be able to compare the pros and cons against each other. Practical elements must also be considered of course- the fees, living costs, potential scholarships availability etc. Many universities offer portals to talk to alumni, professors as well as current studies, and they are always ready to help. This step should be done about 10-12 months before. If this is a facility you do have, prepare a list of questions before your interaction to scope out the real experience of each institute and each course. At the end of this, you’ll definitely have a small handful of names to your liking and preferences.

Standardized Test-taking

This is one of the most time-sensitive parts as most standardized tests required by foreign universities have set times, dates and detailed registrations. Allocate sufficient time to find out which tests you need, how long the results are valid for, what exactly you need to study and prepare for the tests themselves. Aim to complete all these assessments somewhere between 9-12 months before your intended initiation date, so as to have a complete assessment portfolio.

Documentation

There are a number of documents required to start the admission procedure, and most of these need to be a specific way to ensure they are accepted. Prepare a list of everything you will need, and tick them off one by one as they are secured. These documents may include academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal statements, essays, and a flawless resume or curriculum vitae (CV). As you may need to approach other people for these documents (like old professors or ex-employers), attempt to start this early, around 6-9 months prior.

Application Submission

There are a couple of different semesters in foreign universities which all start at different times during the year. For example, the most popular initiation period is during August-September and has the largest number of students flying abroad. Whichever session you choose, you are most likely required to submit your application at least 6-9 months before the start date. This gives the institution enough time for processing it as needed. So aim to collect everything you need before this time, in an orderly manner and adhere to any additional instructions the university may provide. In most cases, the applicant hears back from officials 3-6 months before start of the term.

Visa Application and Travel Arrangements

After you receive your acceptance letter, congratulations! You can now start making your travel and accommodation arrangements, around 2-4 months prior. Top priority should be given to your visa application, which is your primary document all throughout your travel and stay, so pay attention carefully to the entire process. To make well-informed decisions about your accommodation, try to get into contact with students who are planning to fly with you, or ex-students who have enough experience to guide you. Many universities have provisions to make these connections on their own websites or social media pages.

Initiating a study abroad journey is exciting for sure, but above all, timing is key to a successful application process. Following a well-structured timeline will help you meet deadlines, gain scholarship opportunities, and ensure a smooth move from home to your foreign academic adventure. Always keep in mind that early preparation and planning lay the foundation for a fulfilling and enriching experience abroad.
